Owner’s Spotlight: Steve Hayward

I’m Steve Hayward, a mortgage agent in Hamilton, Ontario, with Dominion Lending Centres.

I look forward to sharing my story. I hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.

I started my career in mortgage financing because this business suited me well. I like working flexible hours, and I enjoy helping people. Once I saw how much someone in the broker world could help people I became very interested in this industry. Mortgage financing appears to be very basic on the surface. However, there are many aspects to this business.

I have been a mortgage agent for nearly five years now. I previously worked in management, so starting out in this field was somewhat a smooth transition. At the same time, a lot of learning is required every day as this business is always changing.

Over the past couple of years, I have noticed that the rules have become tougher and certainly tightened up, but the brokerage I work with now provides the best opportunities I have ever had in this business. We have an incredible list of lenders and resources that suit a variety of needs.

Helping my clients reach their goals is the best part of this job. From guiding a first time home buyer to get there first set of keys to helping someone recover from a situation with a mortgage refinance, it’s all very fascinating. I especially love it when someone comes to me, and I get them more money then their bank can.

My business philosophy is ‘Service Service Service.’ I rely on referrals and repeat clients which makes good service my top priority. If I'm not getting any referrals or repeat business, then I know for sure I'm doing something wrong.

As an individual, I believe what sets me apart from the others is my ability to put my clients in advantageous positions. That means, obtaining a proper approval and a fair agreement that will suit them as time goes on. I attribute most of my business success to persistence which includes keeping up with the latest policies to position my clients for success. My most satisfying story so far is placing my client with a bank or credit union which had turned them down in the first place, it has brought me great joy over the years.

When I am not at work, I love to drag race. It's a very involved hobby I share with my friends and family. I also firmly believe in supporting my community. I stay involved as much as I can to help the people around me grow to reach their goals as I have.
